A Guide to Weed Control Whether you want
beds filled with planted shrubs and flowers or an area for growing vegetables,
weed control is essential for any healthy garden.
In this month’s blog at AD
Landscapes & Maintenance Ltd we look at the different types of
weed control available. Call us on 01604 832

What Are Weeds? Weeds are the plants that grow where you don’t want
them to, such as in flower beds that you have carefully cultivated with shrubs
and bulbs. Once they take hold in your garden, they can be tricky to control.
Managing stubborn grasses and other invasive weeds can
take up a lot of time if not dealt with quickly and efficiently. If unwanted
plants are given the time to grow, your future job of clearing them will be
more difficult.
Types of Weed Control There are many methods for controlling invasive plants
in your garden, such as:
Cultural Biological Integrated Chemical A common method for controlling weeds is by using
herbicides. These are chemical compounds that are very effective in managing
unwanted plant growth.
Cultural management is a more environmentally friendly
option as it doesn’t involve chemical use. On agricultural land, this method
includes proper tillage practice, flooding, mulching and mechanical removal.
In your garden, the non-chemical method is
straightforward. The weeds need to be dug out by their roots when the ground is
dry. Hoeing during dry weather is also effective as the roots will dry out and
the unwanted plants will die.
Why Manage Weeds? Invasive plants can very quickly take over your garden.
If you have recently planted some flowers in a bed or are hoping for some
vegetables to begin growing at the end of your lawn, controlling wild grasses
is essential.
However, having weeds in your garden can be beneficial
sometimes. For example, once they are at the end of their life cycle and die
back, they deposit valuable nutrients back into the topsoil. This can benefit
future endeavours for growing flowers, vegetables or shrubs in the future.
Even though there are benefits to letting them grow, it
is still important to manage weeds. They can quickly get out of hand and spread
to areas of your garden where you don’t want them.
